Yeah that's how it is here at ivytech. The basic structural welding course is 100% paid for by the federal government minus your PPE and all they teach is MIG, TIG and stick, T lap and butt welds in the 4 G and F basic positions and how to fill in V channels in all 4 positions. I can't complain it's enough that I have a foundation to build from.

Now that I’m watching this video I’m rethinking my schooling. My first semester the instructor didn’t teach a damn. Dude was late every single day. 20mins-1hr late. We basically learned from each other,And YouTube did play a huge part. I’m on my second semester..and I’ve noticed that I’m behind than the rest of the students. Luckily I have semi decent instructors, and helpful class mates.

thank you for this video. i'm curious about welding and never had the chance to give it a try. I grew up in a big city & didn't get any hands on technical skills. I'm 33 now & going to back to community college for a free intro to welding class. For the first month we're getting an amazing lecture on material sciences, physics, engineering.. subjects I never got a chance to explore in high school. learning about safety and some of the extreme dangers, the risk that welders go through is really crazy. there should be more appreciation for the people that do this as a profession!

I've been a welder in a fabrication shop for a year and really wish I saw this video before I had started You're exactly right with it only being 10% of the work and I didn't even know about warping and all this stuff beforehand cuz nobody ever told me in welding school and it's good to hear someone mentioned the money cuz my girlfriend tells her friends that I'm a welder and they're all like oh he must make a lot of money well that's just not the case for a lot of welders

yeah man the welding world is so deeply diverse and you do NOT need to go to school. But one thing you have to do to be a good welder is PAY ATTENTION AND FOLLOW PROCEDURE AND BE HUMBLE. And safe. Know that your welds, if not done properly, can kill people. So take it deadly seriously and don 't be a fuking clown. Be as serious as you would demand from your doctor if they were going to operate on your child.

6:09 They had bins of different metal thicknesses for us at Welding school, and we got lots of booth time and personalized instruction, but only the teacher's favorites got to fabricate. But I am thankful for the booth time. It got me a job at a fab shop that got me endless amounts of time fabricating, tacking, and fitting dumpsters and trailers of all kinds using carbon steel and AR steels. Great stepping stone. Now I am in a fab shop where I am exposed to oxy fuel, blueprints from thermodynamics industries, and I am using the CNC table, the bandsaw, the brake press, drill pressing, some lathing, fence fabrication, stick welding, TIG (not so much yet, just tacks at this point), sandblasting, and the all wtih aluminum, carbon, stainless and AR.

4:04 THIS!!!!! AMEN. THIS IS WHERE YOU BEGIN TO BE ABLE TO ASK FOR A GOOD PAYCHECK AND GET SKILLS THAT TRANSFER FROM JOB TO JOB. Sorry for all the caps but this is the real part. Learning how to make stuff and reading that tape and other instruments of measurement and drilling, and bending, and cutting, and lathing, and so many more thiings for the competency badge.

Too funny lol … I am old lol or getting old fast .. just bought a torch for oxyacetylene welding etc , never welded before .. plan to use the torch in my art work for my future art museum. Maybe I will make a few things.

Welding as a pro sounds like a lot of work , does seem like a very big field , I bet there are many ways to go. Welding space ships sounds fun but I would not want to weld for Darth Vader .. “your welding has failed me for the last time !!!” LOL

I almost did weld underwater eons ago in commercial diving school.

    To be young again lol

I have been hired several times as a certified welder, next thing I know I doing layout, fitting and fixturing 95% of the time and maybe 5% welding, the response from the company, "we can get welders all day but layout, fitter and fixture guys are hard to find", your video is on point for sure Anthony.

I also believe that all of the fabrication skills you refer to are critical. Most of the basics like tape reading and following a line should be done in grammar school, but that's another topic.

It's called welding school because the main focus is teaching people how to weld and to read a weld pool, the ultimate factor of any welding job. If you can't weld, you don't get the job or you look like an idiot after trying. You don't learn how to penetrate pipe or plate while you're learning to read a tape measure or make accurate cuts.

We have a guy that just got out of a "welding school", but he can't penetrate 18ga stainless. My CC didn't teach tape reading or how to make consistent cuts because it was expected that you already knew that or could figure out what 5th graders learn to do, follow a line. We focused on welding, how to read a weld pool, read your HAZ and the metallurgy because that's what's important if you want to do critical welding or not have your weldment open up like a zipper.

That focus on welding gave me the ability to learn from a Master Blacksmith whose been working longer than I've been alive. He handed me four exotic metals I've never welded before as my weld test and that knowledge I learned at CC by just focusing on the welding is what landed me that incredible opportunity.

I agree that there is always a better way, but I don't believe there's a right or wrong way. I know structural guys that went through the traditional apprenticeship that don't know the first thing about TIG welding, we have TIG welders at our shop that don't have a clue about stick, MIG or oxyfuel cutting and to each their own. If they are content with being ignorant one trick monkeys, so be it, I'll take all of the work they don't know how to do.

The general population doesn't understand that the welding trade is not just a 6-month course and you a tradesmen in the art of welding . Where I come from you need a 3 year apprenticeship to become a certified ticketed welder. You are not a trademen yet. That takes another 5 years to know something about the trade . Then you can say you are a welder . Even then you are always learning

I went to welding school after about 15 years in carpentery. My first job in a fab shop, I was immediately recognized as the best cutman/fitter, and they almost never wanted me to weld. I guess the moral of my story is, don't be too good at the things you dont want to do all the time.

I can do alright on mig/stick only a decent handful of times I welded but definitely penetrated decent… my question ????? Is for someone like me who want to learn how to fabricate so I can build roll cages and create bad azz toys what do I need to do or where to go to learn this … I’m a gear head and more …. I love metal arts as well as custom builds …

Yeah I went to a welding school for 2 years, teachers didn't want to help for shit cause they were just old grumpy welders. And if you don't know what type of welding you want to do you'll probably just waste your time getting kind of good at alot of things and not industry certified in anything but bend plates.

I'm in welding school on a grant and man you got damn right I learn on my own about actually setting up a plate, or pipe, the correct measurement and fittings, etc. Welding, fitting, and fabrication, would you agree ?

I first welded when I was seven years old on the bottom of the USS Enterprise with 7018 rod. I think I wrote my name, LOL…anyways fast forward to after high school. I took welding at a junior college. First thing I was told to enroll in by the instructors were SMAW 101! GMAW and GTAW came after two semesters of SMAW. Learned a lot and everything I learned on stick, I appiled to Mig and more than mig, I applied to Tig funny enough.

I’m enrolled in community college wanting to weld right now. I start in three days and my whole first semester is machine shop stuff. I weld multiple times a week for my own uses already but I want those certifications. Due to my grades and ACT score I’ll end up paying about $250 per semester and feel comfortable with that investment. I’ve spent more than that on rods and angle grinders.
