November 14, 2022 - 1:28 pmOkay I realize this is an older computer but I got one of these at a Goodwill store (with the Tech Center) it has the i3 CPU no hard drive (or caddy) but no issues as I have a few 2.5" SATA drives at home.
Anyway will this accept a 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) CPU they both use the G2 Intel socket I don't want to buy one to find out it will not work.
If not which is the sweet spot 2nd generation one to get (price vs. performance ratio)?
I know the i7 will be better but is there that much difference between the 2 I am aiming for a quad core version (Q in the model code)

PS: This seems well built and most components are easily accessed from the bottom unlike most consumer models which require the motherboard to be removed to even get to the hard drive.
(a high failure part also, plus I seen people just smash the whole thing when they get a newer model Vs. just selling it or removing it as it is not easy to get at!)

November 14, 2022 - 1:28 pmYou can also add 0.3mm copper shims to the other chips (2) that are in the way of the heatsink pipe, and use a good thermal paste as Grizzly Kryonaut. It cooled very well the system that way.

November 14, 2022 - 1:28 pmI just replaced a core i5 CPU in my Dell e6420 laptop with an Intel Core i7-2670QM, and it works nicely. I am using a 90watt charger, and nothing else was replaced (both the fan/heatsink and the motherboard is the same, with A21 bios). This is a 45watt TDP cpu compared to the previous core i5 which was 35watt.
Obviously if I load the system it produces more heat, but it is not overheating. I used high qulaity heat paste, as the original one was already dried up a long tine ago.
