Does anyone have any online degree in the IT field from WGU (West Governors University)? if so can you tell me if it's worth it or not?

Southern careers dropout. Was interested in their cyber security. Got in only to find out that the school didn't even run the program and outsourced it to WozU a online school owned by Steve Wozniak. Taught absolutely nothing about cyber security. Focused on vocabulary and "marketing and networking" the few video classes they did were done in Microsoft paint and used rudimentary shapes over actual diagrams

    What college isn't for profit?

I graduated from ITT in 1991 with an associates degree. Didn’t take long to understand that at 20 years old I just wasted two years and thousands of dollars. They claimed 100% job placement after graduation. I asked the placement lady about that claim after having no luck and she literally said “we didn’t say you would be working in your field”…..da fuk? And I was one of the top students in my class too…
Paid on that fricken loan for ten damn years.. I wanted to pay it off early but I discovered that the interest was already included so I wouldn’t save a penny doing so… I threw a party when ITT went under.

Degrees are largely irrelevant for software engineering jobs. That's an occupation you're almost entirely better off learning through self-teaching online, and you'll be better off than most people at school because you'll be used to keeping yourself up to date unlike some colleges. As a recent recipient of a software engineering masters, I'll tell you all I did was spend a ton of time and money for an otherwise useless piece of paper that employers think actually somehow makes me valuable.

Reminds me of my job hunting experience. I thought the degree would buy me into a good job. Not even close, all it was was an expensive piece of paper.

No, what got me into the job was a high school elective that I just kept using during college. I use none of my degree at my work.

If you do choose online school, do it via an accredited university. Some genuine schools have online classes. My State University does

My attorney got his JD from the university of American Samoa. He acts a bit shady but he helps with my cases in unexpected manners so can’t complain

Don’t let them fool you. All schools are for profit.

I'm a practicing Registered Nurse, I went through an excellerated 2 year program that was absolute grueling ( so much screaming into pillow and breaking plates to release stress) and now I am in an online program through a recognized 4 year nursing program. I have 4 classes left and still contemplating about finishing them because what is the point? I am already working in a hospital, hardly anyone has a 4 year RN degree, I'm doing exactly what I would do now as I would after my 4 year degree, and I am currently saving thousands of dollars not finishing my last 4 classes. Sure I wasted a year already taking 6 classes, but right now I see no point in finishing. I can always finish at a later date

I'm sorry, but "no for-profit colleges" is some bs. Every college, even ones that clearly state they're not, are for-profit these days with tuition and sporting events and the money only goes back into the system if it makes even more money or a big donor strong arms them into doing so. The employer just thought lesser of the poster and made up what sounded like a valid excuse.

Years ago when they first started I gave them my phone number and when they said 20,000 dollars for an online course I hung up. Thats stupid expensive for an online course.

Wife went to a brick and mortar DeVry for a couple semesters. We stopped because a)it was horrendously expensive, $9k for 2 semesters. B) she said she really didn't learn anything, and the instructors never responded. I also knew a guy in my first help desk job that had a similar experience. He said going to class was like ripping all the pages out of a book and throwing it at a fan. There was no consistency from one class to the next.

Crap…. I went to an online college and have yet to get a job.

Thankfully I only have like 8k in loans (2k if the forgiveness hits)

My school was Charter College based in the PNW.

It is incredible, and I consider they justify much more than that.

So what i'm hearing is that online schools are only benericial for people who already have significant pre-education experience in the field they're studying for, yes?
Where should people like me, who don't have any hands-on experience with things, seek quality education?

It makes me laugh how they call them 'for-profit universities'…ALL universities, even places like Harvard and MIT, are 'for-profit'.
They don't deliver their courses etc only at cost, and they certainly aren't taking losses.

My wife went to the University of Phoenix's online college and then did her Master's at an online school in Kentucky. Definitely was not a scam like ITT Tech (my brother went there for a bit) but so far she has not had trouble staying in work. The cost however was close to 2-3x what my business degree was (went to a in-state university).
