June 4, 2024 - 4:08 pmIf I have one criticism of your approach, it's that FF14's amount of reading and story content is a feature, not a bug. It's meant as a gateway for people more used to single player RPGs, like most of the other FFs. I agree that it could definitely use more "show don't tell" when it comes to the tutorials themselves, but the game having a long, story-heavy set of cutscenes at the start IS actually preparing you for the experience of playing the game; that's just the speed it rolls at, and that's why it was able to gain its reputation as the king of storytelling in the MMO space. Otherwise I really enjoyed the video!

June 4, 2024 - 4:08 pmIn FF14 you unlock the ability to learn other classes by completing a quest, at the end of which the game tells you that you can learn other classes now. You can then unlock those classes through quests which grant a starter weapon.
In WoW, that "microtransaction" shop is for an in-game currency that cannot be obtained with real money

June 4, 2024 - 4:08 pmThis was probably brought up before but the Trading Post in WoW is not a microtransaction shop, it is in fact a way to get cosmetics they didn't know where to put in the game with currency you can earn by doing random activities in a given month.
Imagine it as a battle pass that you can do in an afternoon.

Exile's Reach and Kul Tiras were great additions (assumedly part of Battle for Azeroth? Fits the warcraft name). It's helped it stick for me better than prior attempts to get into it over the years.

I tried going back to WoW (I quit in Cata), they have f*cking shat all over it, and by "they" I mean the players. The elitists and add-on users and gold sellers and no-lifers, besides Blizzard's decline itself, the players are responsible for a lot of what has happened and the community is toxic as hell. Also 10 years of content has been swept under the rug.
I tried FF14. I played it for less time than it took to download and then uninstalled it, It was designed for weebs and moths. It had pretty much 0 immersion, Spawned creatures everywhere, world quests constantly happening and resetting, shit popping up on the screen every 2 seconds, car mounts flying around in the desert, ridiculous names, bright colours everywhere and again, weebs. Unless you're into the whole cat girl shit and enjoy the sounds of a grown woman speaking like she's 4 years old, it's borderline disgusting. Funny thing is, I don't remember many if any of the FF games being like that.
SWTOR is a parasite dressed as Star Wars content designed to suck your wallet dry and arm wrestles your hand directly into your wallet by cutting you off at every QoL you can imagine.
Runescape may unironically be the best MMO of 2024.

Of fast traveling back-and-forth to places you’ve already been, watching a 10 minute cut scene, or reading 10 minutes of dialogue, then, fast traveling back again, then fast traveling back to where you just were to tell that person what the other person told you about the thing you just heard from the person like dammit can’t you people just pick up the phone and call each other? Why am I involved? Why am I here? I was max pre-expansion level, love the game the art the combat I just could not keep grinding my head against that goddamn story I couldn’t do it. stopped playing maybe two years ago? and I never had one of those “let me go back and play again” things, I just think about that story and I can’t.

Do a task, everyone and their brother reacts to it, embark on the next task, trigger more cutscenes… Player agency in FFXIV feels vestigial, like they wanted to make a movie but begrudgingly put quests in. And I write that as someone who beat the most recent expansion.
Basically, you get a lot of cutscenes with mostly filler quests in-between.
