Another 20+ minute video that could be done in 10 at most. Pity, skipping this too. There are so many videos to watch sir, and I don't have the luxury of listening to people who talk much and say little.

Has anyone ever lapped a cooler?

This just clearly shows that AMD should't have worried so much about backwards compatiabilty and just focused on the performance and heat aspects instead.

So, in the meantime i grided down the noctua plate as it had some machining grooves, and now i have perfect flat on flat surface, replaced paste with cryonaut extreme, and i still hit 95, i do belive frecuency and voltage went up though so i might get more performance

I'm waiting for yall to bug a small surface grinder

I took a belt sander to my wraith cooler, then lapped it and got 5 degrees with new paste

The belt sander step was pointless dude, the original machining is much better than any belt sander finish, you should be using a figure 8 motion when sanding. another thing to do would be to lap the IHS to the Heat block to provide perfect mounting.

    Belt grinder ?
    Really ?

  • Marius Voicu

    November 12, 2022 - 4:23 am

Ok, i shaved like 1-1.1mm but i still reach 95, idk if it's the paste or i need to add some spacers to compress noctua coller a bit more

If you take off 1.5mm from the IHS, doesn’t that fuck with cooler mounting hardware?

  • Marius Voicu

    November 12, 2022 - 4:23 am

The darn thing is also concave… and 1.4mm is a lot to shave off even with high grit

Lap the CPU and Cooler heatsink both perfectly flat so you can ring them for direct molecular contact with no thermal paste. Shouldn't even need a retention system that way either.

    "Lapping compound insulates"
Last I heard, diamond was the best thermal conductors known to man. Although a flawed reason, I would also advise against lapping as it doesn't make a significant enough of a difference.

Amd should produce two versions of the CPU. One where its 'compatible' with existing hardware but not as temperature efficient, and the other version where the CPU lid is as thin as they can make it, but then it's down to the user to make it fit their mounting hardware. This would require the motherboard manufacturers to also cooperate with the way they create the mounting hardware.

Since Der8auer has access to a CNC, what would happen if you milled a pattern into the IHS and milled an opposing, interlocking pattern into a cold plate? This would increase the surface area and thin the IHS in the process.

WAY late to the comments. Has anyone thought about grinding down the contact on the water cooler instead? If the goal is to reduce the distance between the CPU and the diffusion element, I'd rather shave a millimeter off a $150 AIO than a $900 CPU.

Why not remove the cover and put the block directly on the diodes? Using a belt sander? Thats crazy! I would rather take my time and do it by hand. Overall this is great content and it just shows how things can be improved without spending much money and just simply aplying original out of the box ideas!

why can't the bracket just temporarily lock in to mount the cpu for a better mechanism and thinner ihs??? once cpu is mounted the bracket can come off…like am4 the cooling was better for that reason we see here. I vote for am4 to just stay. personal opinion.

I would love to do a thermal simulation of the IHS to see what the improvement would be without the influence of lapping.
However i dont have access to a CPU. @JayzTwoCents is there a way you could get me some measurements of a un-sanded IHS and the thinnest thickness that would be possible?

Jay, quick question. Builzoid showed that the 7950X was very efficient at 150w.
Do you think it would be an interesting video to compare gaming with balls to the walls tunning like you did vs 150W?

It's pathetic when pc enthusiasts need to delid their cpu, void warranty, risk loosing several hundred dollars, just to get sustained max performance.

You can polish lid. I have done it every time i shaved down a cpu. polish doesn't leave some kind of protective barrier on metal, just use 99% alcohol and clean it thoroughly.
