February 2, 2023 - 1:39 pmDutch (and I guess worldwide, but I've no comparison) HR flunkies are often idiots… Don't take it personally.
I've been rejected for a job for the sole reason that I wasn't married with children… Actual proficiency was of no interest to the HR flunky, nor was the fact that the actual people who were interviewing me about that were impressed and wanted to have me hired.
This goes on a lot especially if you were initially invited for the interview process by someone outside of HR. They get grumpy at the people inviting you and take it out on them by rejecting everyone that wasn't invited by them. Not just I have that experience but a lot of people I know do.
CV tuning can indeed be important. This is because the screening of incoming applications is usually done by automated processes, or by interns with no actual knowledge about the subject material relevant for the job.
Those people or systems are fed a list of keywords and phrases, and if those aren't all found in the CV it's automatically rejected. Only the few percent that passes that screening is even sent to someone with subject matter knowledge (if then, it may go through another screening by an HR manager, cutting out even more candidates).
The larger and more bureaucratic the organisation, the more important this becomes.
As a contractor, when trying to find new contracts, we tune our CVs for every single application, adding and removing things as needed while not slipping into lies (obviously). This can take hours or days for each application.
btw, you got lucky you weren't instantly rejected for writing more than 200 words. Again, often a first screening for such things is fully automated, with automatic rejection for such things.
I guess they were impressed enough with you already that that assessment was taken as a formality only, a box to be ticked. But even then it can fail you instantly and nothing the hiring manager can do about it "because it's HR policy".
I've had something like that happen more than once. Being all but offered a job by a department manager, only to have HR block it because I "failed" their "assessment" or "suitability test" (which isn't, it's a disguised and fundamentally flawed IQ test that's almost impossible to pass for a lot of people because of the way it is structured, not because they're stupid).
