If they can implement this new technology, it will transform the world! Hopefully they will use this for good and not for military applications! No chance of that happening!

Add to this discovery recent progress in non-linear optics and we can look forward to a time when the human mind will be able to interface directly with a computer. Just in case I am not conscious when this happens I have already prepaid for and reauthorized the op. It's exciting and dangerous and a fascinating time to be alive. In fact, things have gotten so interesting I have started up a good exercise program and have really started watching my weight. Thaings have just started to get exciting.

The potential for this to be used in AI driven robots is exciting and makes me really want to be around for as long as possible to see what our near future holds. We are on the cusp of such a radical change in humanity due to automation and AI and we need an advancement in microprocessor capability to make this a reality.

Ideas of today become realities of "tomorrow."

With our current technology and even if this gets off the ground, one major problem is that with a "light" device, even if used to make RAM, there's no way to make non-volatile memory.

Then, storage devices…. not with "light" devices as there's no way to keep a light on without some power source.

You can have a super high-speed CPU, but if you put that on a system with normal memory and storage devices, THOSE are the bottlenecks.

yeeep….this will destroy current processors….but i think old proccesors will still be used in a light sensetive conditions…question is when….also they should blast it with radiation to see the effects..

It will take another 5 to 10 Years before they would have a possible refined processor. It will also be extremely expensive to purchase and probably will only show up in high end servers to start. It might become economical in 15 to 20 years as a practical processor retail computing devices.

Now that we can use light, maybe it's time to rethink computing as we know it. We could stop using switches. Using different wavelengths of light, we could carry different kinds or mixtures of info/ideas. I wonder what Moore's equivalent thought in 1900 about the limits of computing.

I wish storage also utilize light since it can carry more than two bits, say for example yellow is 1, red is 2, blue is 3 etc etc…while electricity is 0 is off, 1 is on
