Freelancing is tough but not impossible, that's the reason you can't just rely on single sources of income. You should learn different skill set to survive and you should start it by getting a job to know things and build network to get project after your job!!

I have my own company and i can agree on every single point. Ity really isn't for everyone. The one gripe i have with it as i can take doing taxes… lack oif security etc. But what really gets me is the fact you have to constantly search for new customers. Sure, you will have some reoccuring customers but one day they will just stop ordering. You need a turnover of customers so you are stuck in a endless cycle as if you were searching for a job. It simply never ends. And also, forget 8-5 work hours. You will work a lot, especially at the start.

Thanks for this video! Now, this made me think if people with disability can have income through freelancing cause most of the time, these people are the ones can't have work in the companies to the point all they have is the internet to get an income.

freelance designer here for 12 years. i was lucky i found a company that offers security and allowed me to do freelance jobs. luck played a part. get good so you dont have to spend all your time for freelance and you would have time for a creative company.

Rule #1: You have to have at least 3 months worth of your total monthly expenses saved up before even considering going freelance.
In fact, the safest route would be to have more. Somewhere around 6 months worth of your total monthly expenses saved up sitting in your bank account.

Wish I had known that too before I went freelance πŸ˜³πŸ˜‰

On more thing you didn’t mention is that as a freelance designer, you need to constantly be learning to make sure your value stays relevant

Freelancing is very difficult. Finding clients and them actually paying you is another story. Freelancing is stressful even if you have the right skill set. I suggest you work as a full time designer at an agency because at leat you'll get paid by the end of the month, Don't just jump into freelancing until you're ready.

You need to learn to let others do the jobs you can't do well or don't want to do. You are better off spending the day designing than a day doing paperwork and accounting, learn to use other trusted professionals.

I took a full time job a few years back after being a freelancer for a number of years. The office job can be a drag but it definitely has its benefits in terms of security etc..

now when & IF I take on any outside work its only gonna be for something worth while to me creatively since it’s no longer about the money.. which is wonderful as long as I stay true to this.. I want to be able to flex my muscles and take on projects I enjoy if I’m doing it in my off time… only issue is most of the time I run into the same old same old with clients and it just becomes more stress in my day to day. Some of it is on me for ignoring red flags and hoping for the best but.. damn I’d love more cool gigs with clients that trust in my talents/skills/knowledge and don’t just turn into the same crap I deal with at work and that I used to put up with as a freelancer the good old β€œwe needed this yesterday…” (when I was brought on way way after the fact of it being behind) β€œwe know our logo/visual identity/yes using 6 typefaces on this design and know it is bad and we are open to a new direction.. but then just ends up… β€œwe need you to work within the current style & match the last design (even tho we know it’s bad and even had complaints that it looked amateur..” & then you try to help them push in a better direction when they said they were open to pushing things a bit.. and they reject your work.. & then the time I’ve invested of my own personal time feels wasted.. I get enough of this type of crap in the day job.

I’d love to work on more freelance work but there tends to be such a lack of understanding with a lot of clients I’ve seen this for years in freelance and my full time job..

in any event taking on freelance work now usually has the effect of making me go.. ya know what? My full time office job isn’t so bad after all.. and you know what else? Watching YouTube vids about how you should be working for yourself with your dream clients no longer depresses me.. like I’ve failed as a designer for having an office job with benefits..

I got myself a brand new house (during covid none the less!) & now rather than living in a one bedroom apartment for the 10+ years as a freelancer.. scrounging for money.. trying to prove myself to clients.. to myself etc.. and taking on work with blehgggg clients just to scrape by.. is a thing I do not miss.

Even if you're with a company, it's good to save money each month. Companies go bust, taking pensions & what not with them.

Many people don’t understand it’s all about connections. If you know people you will earn money very fast it’s incredible. Me and my friends are students or unemployed but we know many local celebrities. In two weeks we will fly to London to film and photograph the international Barcup. All I wanted to say is you have to get out and get to know people it’s so so important.
