What is working at a creative advertising agency like? Hours, culture, pros/cons | career talk

I often get asked what working at an advertising / marketing agency is like, and so here is my honest take based on my experience. I will first talk about the structure of a creative marketing shop, the main teams that are involved from account services, strategy and creative. Then, I talk about the working culture, what my hours are like, and what the general environment is like. And yes, the stereotypes are true. Last, I talk a bit about why I chose this career route straight out of university, what the main learnings are if you choose to enter this industry and what my favorite part of work is.

We definitely are not saving lives, but advertising is a very thought-provoking and forward-looking space, so if you someone who is naturally curious, likes fast-paced work and using creativity to solve problems, advertising could be a fit for you.

I am happy to be of help and answer other questions about career, so please comment below if you have other ones in mind!

Hey Dahye! I've really liked your video! Your description of work was brief and understandable as well! Thank you so much!
I have only one question and really want to know your opinion. As I understand, your job is located in the USA, so you work with the american market of advertisement. Now I study the program called "Strategy and Production in Communications" at the HSE University. It's a 300–400th top class university (by some of the world's global university rankings) and they give me a modern US market–oriented strategies, so basically I understand that getting a bachelor's here would definitely bring me a pack of competitive skills. But the problem is that my university isn't located in the USA. In the nearest future I have a goal to move to the US and try to apply for a job to work in an advertising agency. What do they their staff look at when they're reading an employee's HR? Is is really that necessary to have an American college degree to work in the American industry of advertisement or they just look at your skills or portfolio, not the college degree. Also I think that the experience of job which would be lasting in my country would not count for my potential american employers just because they seek for a US job experience. It's sooo hard to understand the foreign system. But I only have one life and one opportunity to try. Please give me an advice! That's gonna be a crazy appreciation from me!

Thanks for that Dahye. I just joined an agency after years of struggling in in-house, and this thing seems to fit my personality way more. It's a lot less dry for sure. Best of luck with yours as well ❀

I was just wondering how to achieve such career? I was thinking about going into consumer psychology ( masters in applied sciences with consumer and IO psychology) and then the advertising agency route. However if I need to I could also get a marketing degree masters. What are you thoughts?
