I think the more relevant comparison is the i3 12100, it's closer in performance.

Ryzen 5 2600x and Nvidia GeForce 1080 are still a great gaming build for 1080p

It's true, you DON'T need an 8 or 16 core CPU. Hyperthreading/SMT is key. 4 cores works great, and 6 cores gives you room for games to expand into in the next year or two. I can't see anyone saying '12 threads isn't enough' for at least the next 5 years.

For last decade been using AMD FX8320. One week ago, I bought a used Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E motherboard & Intel i7 8700 non K variant for $50 dollars total. Before that was able to snag a EVGA EVGA GTX 1080 SC 8GB for $40 dollars.

While the i7 8700 is not fast compare to the new stuff out on the market. It does offer me a nice improvement in both single core & multicore performance over the FX8320 I been using.

I hope budget mid tier Intel boards adopt more widely the bclk oc capabilities/design that allows it edit: for non k skus

Imo, Pre-Owned is the way to go, and that's my motto, I just picked up a Ryzen 5 5600x on the used market for only $145 complete in box with cooler, I would absolutely recommend finding good deals on the used market for a 5600x or a 7 3700x-3800x CPU, get it for less than $160 and you won't have to worry about any sacrifices whatsoever, you get both the best performance and value,

    No. NO. just NO!

it's sooo much harder to upgrade the mobo and cpu than it is to upgrade any of the other parts – that i'd rather just start off strong on those things.

12100F if building new. I'd buy 3600 used before a 5500. Cache is just too limited if gaming on an older card. Those 1% lows would be brutal

I managed to find a used Ryzen 3600 for 80 USD and b450 motherboard for 30 USD. New 5600 costs 235 USD where I live, so probably not worth the extra money.
    Upgrading from an FX 8350.

If you're going to make the price argument for the 5500 then you should look at the R5 3600 or the 12100f

A lot of people overlook one important thing… different currencies different prices.
Where I live for the price of an R5 5600 I can get an R5 5500, 16GB 3600 RAM and a cheap cooler like the Arctic Freezer 34. As an alternative you can get a R5 5500 a cheap mobo when on promo and 16GB 3600/3200 RAM. Btw all the items I mention are new, so if you go with 2nd hand with the price difference you can get some nice extra stuff. Another option is if you get an R5 5500 and you were going to buy an RX 6600 for example with the extra cash you can now take an RX 6600 XT.
So while the R5 5600 is definitely better, the R5 5500 have it's place.

Would a ryzen 5500 work on an msi x 370 gaming motherboard with the new bios flash?

Hey Brian, can you show if there's a difference between the 5500 and 5600 between 400, and 500 series motherboards. Say if I were to upgrade just the chip, would I lose and performance by using a 450, 470, or 550 board. Thanks, enjoy your content.

Yeah best value 6 core is still probably 10400f. Esepcially when retailers try to get rid of them and make constant sales since 12th gen release. Not that future proof, but you can assemble entire platform for cheap and when its upgrade time, just sell entire platform and go with another deal.

I said this already on HUB. But I still wanna spread it here.
Unless 3600 is 10-20% cheaper than 5500, then 5500 always be the better buy than 3600, especially if you are really into RAM OC.
With monolithic 7nm die (combined IO die and Core compute die), 5500 FCLK can clock like 2200mhz easily with 1.2v SOC (recommend is 1.1v, 1.2v is the last 'safe' borderline).
    4400mhz RAM sound good?
No Vermeer chip (5000 series with full cache) can do 2200mhz FCLK. So this is Cezanne advantage.
Upcoming Ryzen 7000 use 6nm+, so I think FCLK can clock as high as 2600mhz or more to support DDR5-5200 or higher by default. Or something like 1900 FCLK but UCLK and MCLK is double FCLK for an integer synchronize. With 1900×4, well, DDR5-7600

Hardware Unboxed says the exact opposite. Direct quotes "Ryzen 5500 in a nutshell, certainly works well enough but realistically it should be avoided…", "Don't buy this CPU", and "…a hard pass". The 5500 is not a normal desktop CPU. Is is a "G" SKU with the graphics removed.

I really enjoy the prices of Ryzen CPU´s had a 5800X for 269 once and a 5900X for 329 would totaly not fit the Value 6 core CPU but its really a great value for me

Ryzon and so many videos watching the 3600 have to be replaced because it was burned out I can't even trust Ryzon again. Agree on that what game can I not play and why would you spend more money and overbuilt anything all of these kids want to over build spend more money than they need and down the road it's really not going to benefit them in any manner.
