One thing that gets me in comments about XIV is that someone inevitably brings up the cash shop as some sort of mic drop but it’s not. There are some outfits, mounts, and emotes that are unique to the shop but a lot of it is old holiday content that WAS ingame because they bring out new stuff every year, and dyes which are also available ingame. There is easily 100x more gear, mounts, minions, and emotes available ingame that you don’t pay real world money for and they always have new content coming up with new rewards. In one of the recent patches they made it so you can put all the store-bought gear in the separate storage chest. Even though they just increased the space in the main transmog dresser to 800 slots it’s still too easy to fill it without cash shop, holiday, and special event gear going into the separate chest. The cash shop is easily avoidable and in no way integral to the game.

Good video, you spelled it out well.

Simply put. FFXIV has added more in-game earnables so people continue subscriptions. See a sub is constant and consistant. Why hope you sell a skin when you can add content that will have multiple people subing for months each to attain.

You're making a big jump with the idea that exchanging in-game currency for real-world currency is 'pay to win'. The whole argument on that topic is that "gearing is winning". This is NOT the case in most MMO's. Getting gear is just the first step in end-game. You still need to learn your rotation, learn to PvP, etc. If anything at all, it's pay for convenience and I have zero issue with that. Not all of us have hours and hours to devote to playing a game. Some of us have things like a job, wife, kids, etc that require time away from the videogame. You shouldn't have to be a sweatlord who lives in this mythical realm to participate in end-game content.

I haven’t watched the rest of the video yet but ffxiv and old school rune scape both Show respect to their playerbase in a way I don’t know from other mmos.

What really killed MMOs is change of mindset in gamers, olders MMOs was hard and grindy, where old generation of gamers had like 5-10 games to play overall they was playing one or two at most and build they character to the max and they enjoyed the struggle and was proude od achiving something, todays generation of gamers have 10s of games coming out every month with at least 2-3 of each type every year, where lofe this days compared to lifee 10-15-20 years ago is very easy, you can get anything you want anytime you want, and this generation does not know what it means working hard to get something you want, that is why they jumping from game to game when it is starting to get to hard to progress, making MMOs most affected by thatt as end game and grind is main point to be in this type of the game. for the same reason this days most "wanted" games are battle royals and extractions shooters, as they give a little bit of fill for achievement with every game every like 30-40min and then reset, tjere is completly no big picture in it, its literly go in finish and reset, you 100th game is exactly the same like 10.000th and the outcome of all that games has no effect on eachother, so that filling of achiving something is simply more often in like small doses, and this generation does not know life, for them life was always easy, just get money and you can have it all they do not approciate long term outcome, struggle you had to put cuz they simply do not know anything like that, they go to story and buy newest phone and change it every year or two, where only 20years ago phone was passed in family like inheritance.

i think its the community. OSRS players are probably in their 30s now. but that game is SO casual that u can do it with ur eyes closed. which is perfect when ur older and prob have a family. FF14 is obviously a much more casual MMO than WoW, also it has the anime aesthetic thus prob bringing in a wider audience. esp women. MMOs were also really big before social media was there to fill in peoples online social needs. they used to do it through MMOs

FWIW, I've dumped the most time into games when I've had folks to play with who I've formed some sort of connection with in game, most notably raid and pvp groups. I know that's not a comprehensive excuse for the decline of MMOs, but WoW (for example) systematically, one expansion at a time, dismantled the social structures that made the game popular in the first place. Go back and look at your WotLK example; what else did Blizzard add? Group finder.

  • @Raindanced

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

Until recently, I only knew FF14 for the amazing cinematic and that it was a popular MMO. Recently I been craving an MMO, that is popular and a heap of good content other than WoW. And lately I've been encouraged to play FF14, this video is certainly no exception, and the amount of appraisal for the game's success has definitely given me a game to choose. And the part about P2W factors such as paid currencies being capable of purchasing in-game currencies definitely is demotivating, not to mention half of the MMOs I have played are polluted with either farming bots or chat bots promoting "black market" currency trading that would go against the game's terms/rules. Though I do like the idea of a few previous games with the feature that specific critical gear sets can be farmed/crafted. And my favourite feature is definitely when a game can execute cosmetics and cosmetic dyeing effectively with nice graphics. And it seems like FF14 is practically everything I could hope for… well at least on the surface level from what I've seen until I have tried it.

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

What I like about ff14 yes yeah u can paid for mounts and outfits but theirs always an option to get it free grinding unlike eso and the mpg station pretty cheap compared to for eso 60 or 80 for a freaking mount

  • @xreptarbreex

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

Only two MMOs are breaking the cycle and then he only talks about one of the MMOs lol. Cool video but god damn OSRS got done dirty, wasn't anything in here about it.

For me it’s time. I just haven’t had the time to play like I use to. I have flight school, work, and life going in now. I don’t have hours to spend a week playing a game that much, I still like eso though.

I tried ff14 but for some reason it would crash in character creation… I have a good Pc too. Not sure why it kept happening but I don’t like subscription based games. You spend so much money after a while.

  • @spadesofhearts7714

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

I quit ff14. I hate feeling like my character's presence is insignificant. There's so many players that my damage/contributions don't feel all that great. I like New World's combat and dungeon size. 5 players makes me able to see the difference I make by being there.

  • @TriegaDN

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

I enjoy FFXIV but did I miss something? did he never mention the mounts, emotes, and cosmetics you can buy with real money for a single FFXIV character? Like fuck WoW tokens, but FFXIV isn't cash shop-less, and I feel the need to buy things on the FFXIV store every now and than because the game for most people like myself is treated like a fancy chat program outside of MSQ and roulettes.

  • @SverreMunthe

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

What about what FFXIV did wrong? I quit because they destroyed trading. They thought traders made too much on their products, not even bothering to consider that the market took care of the prices and their promise not to interfere with the games' internal economics. In addition, they had all but given up on bots, further making trading all but a waste of time. FFXIV was the game of my dreams, of most people's dreams, until the complaints of a few destroyed it for a large part of their player base.

  • @junkrat1

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

FF14 is so boring, no loot, cant choose your build, just need to follow a linear story.

  • @rockdem0n

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

One of the big points for me in XIV is I don't miss story if I don't stay current, I can drop my sub and come back later. The only exception being 1.0 is lost forever but that might be a good thing, according to others who were there, and 2.0 is a great starting point anyway.

And from what im seen the main drive for people iznt STORY OR GAME PLAY but the shear off content you can do basicli its DREAS UP FURRY simmulator…..

One of the major things Squenix could do to make FFXIV bwtter, is to make the MSQ optional.

Not EVERYONE wants to slog through a visual novel just to get to the game.

MMORPG can be fully Free to Play with Cosmetics just like League of Legends. Just don't add Power Ups, only Cosmetics. Games like League of Legends proved that Cosmetics bring way more profit than making the game Buy to Play or Pay to Play. People always want Free stuff, but they're always willing to pay if something looks cool. It's so simple🤔🤔🤔

Criminals use virtual gold businesses to launder money, they buy and sell creating a market and that causing a massive influx of botters looking to cash in.
More botters means les players due to being sick of botters.
Lack of investment and updating also plays a part, most are to scared to change things because they not being mean when i say this usually have no actual idea why they got famous in the first place, most of them start as hobby games that take off and expand due to investment and company growth but they always stick to this "style" because there worried they will destroy there own game by changing it. This is the usual reasoning for these issues then you get to things like the company itself scamming, been plenty of times people found out wow, runescape etc were actually running gold and item selling sites as a second profit line, its not just mmo's look at Ark survival evolved, a game where devs were literally selling top stat dinos and mass banning people on pvp servers for attacking certain groups for cash.
The second, the very second a game becomes "popular" its already starting its death spiral, ether due to internal or external corruption.

  • @EternallyGod

WoW numbers are up cause of old content existing on the same sub as the new content. If they were on different subs you would see the real numbers which blizzard employees who just got fired are embarassed about. Imagine being able to only level to 30 being the most popular WoW for the playerbase.

I spent 200+ dollars on crown crates for a mount that drops at less than 1% I got the mount but not from the loot crates but from the secondary currency you get from the loot crates ☠☠Issue with eso is there is LITTLE TO NO cool looking earnable cosmetics in the game everything is shoved in the store and or exclusive to crown crates.

  • @Uttelito

    February 10, 2024 - 6:52 am

The thing is, nothing is new anymore, its all just more of the same, ive been playing WoW since 2005, and each expansion is just more of the same.
what made the game great was the feeling that everything was new and fresh, it was fun to play with people and most of the community was non toxic helpfull players.
nowdays its just more of the same, pay2win, microtransactions, woke bullshit and toxic community.
