Worst MMO Ever? – Ryzom

Hardcore open world MMO, doesn’t hold your hand, not for casuals!

and, as always happens to those games, it died.

to be fair, when I was a kid back in 2007~
I used to play my old emulators using the arrow keys for movements, however in my early teens I changed to wasd and never looked back

annnd this has been the harshest BUT honest review, RYZOM could be good if more effort was put in, considering the devs are a small team and are not making anything from the game, that I know of, it was actually several players that put it back online. I do miss it AS IT WAS but …….. I will leave the memories as they were…..

RYZOM was good in the day, and there was more info around for it floating around. I got back into it last year (2023) and felt sad, there had been so many changes that I had troubles getting back into it.

movement keys in a fully 2d no-mouse experience, i.e. maplestory back in the day.

there are only 3 ways to learn. seeing, hearing, and doing. everyone has a % of each one of these but are clearly better at one of them. personally i learn better from watching someone else do things and then doing them myself. i often struggle to learn things from listening. roughly 50% seeing, 35% doing, 15% listening.

@14:30 hey to be fair Civilization IV (yes, the one with the legendary main menu background music) has a built in MP3 player too. It just doesn't have controls; you turn on a custom music folder which defaults to the Windows XP music library. It was once a popular feature for games that expected you to spend literally hours and hours playing them.

Oh look, it's yet another episode of "Josh Hayes can't accept that he isn't the target audience of every single video game so he'll spend 20 minutes doing mental gymnastics about how his preferred level of hand-holding is "good design" and everything else is "bad design"."

  • @Flackon

I love how the mp3 player statement reveals how at this time Josh still thought MMORPGs were some sort of products aiming for artistic excellence or something

I'm honestly amazed Josh doesn't know what Desura was. Desura was Steam or Gog before those things existed. It was the original way to get indie games. But it died. The thing that exists now is like the Gameforge version of it.

  • @Badusername2000

"Who uses arrow keys" josh just casually forgetting left handed people exist, my right hand is useless on a mouse, so all my key binds need to be on the right side of the keyboard, most mmos are a nightmare for me

25:07 “keeping everything up to a reasonable level”

This is completely not understanding a system. In a classless system, you’re not meant to level every skill. That would be like maxing a character of every class in another game.

Recently started binging on these, very fun! This game though, reminded me of an encounter when I used to do computer training for the visually impaired and blind.
This one person kept saying how computers are hard, so I asked him how so. He went on to demonstrate how deleting a document from My Documents was hard… He started by opening Internet Explorer, clicking the file menu, selecting save web page, and since the default location was My Documents, delete his document from there. Ryzom sounds like they've taken this approach in how they think "hard" works.

this games are eat shitting clubs: you have to eat shit so everyone who got there before can laugh at you eatting shit. after eating it, you are part of the club and can now laugh at everyone else having to eat shit to join the shit eatting club.

Well it's not me but i know people that instantly mute every mmo and listen to music while playing so mp3 may not be the lack of confidence from their side but a may be clever addition knowing there are players that are going to like the feature.

Just in case anyone is wondering, Ryzom responded to this review two years ago by saying they intended to improve their tutorial. If you take a look at their channel (or try the game for yourself) you'll see that not only did they do as they said they would, but they're still hosting events and uploading new content 🏆

I used arrow, or numpad movement control layouts, back before the mouse was used more commonly in games. Then again, a lot of those were old DOS games, when having a mouse wans't as common & loading a mouse driver had real effects on performance.

At the point where you were reading the review about the different magic types branching off at specific levels… while it is excessively complicated, in a game that is interested in the players added a complex system like that… It could be explained as the simplest magic is the easiest, then the branches begin to show a build specialization. Because the game doesn't take the time to explain that though, it feels like it sneaks up on you.

  • @Keevacom

I like “hardcore” games. Not for MMOs though. Dark Souls and Elden Ring or just all From Software games, great hardcore games. Hardcore MMOs are just “hey do you want to grind so hard you prefer actual work to playing this? You know, such that in about a year you won’t die immediately?” and of course I/you don’t but then you’re hit with “well in that case would you like to very slowly traverse the game that isn’t fun to play?” and unsurprisingly I do not but then you’re hit with “well don’t worry because there’s no world building, not just no main quests but nothing” and then I/you as the player get ready to shoot for the head and paint the walls a nice new shade of crimson until remembering the uninstall button exists and then never look back.

Never played this game or even heard of it. By the looks of it I'd say ambiguity was the least of its problems. Many of the most successful games have these mechanics you criticise. Dark souls 1 didn't tell you anything at all, gave you no direction despite having a high level of interconnectivity. Guild wars had death penalty, one of the most popular old school MMO's. None of these things by itself ruins a game to the point of complete failure. I think it's pretty clear that this game never gained traction because WoW is a much more polished game in every regard. There is no structure in world design like there is in WoW, the music and sound design is miles better, the combat better, animations better, it had VA, mounts, auction house, PvP landscapes, raids, fleshed-out towns and hubs. You can't compare this game to wow at all. It's not even in the same league.

Oh wow, ok. So I played Eve for years, I was and am a HUGE dwarf fortress fan. I picked up Ryzom because I had been a big fan of gathering and crafting in Star wars Galaxies. I would say I like deep complex systems in these games, but what I don't like is huge amounts of mindless grinding. So in Ryzom I managed to grind to the point where I could make guns. Then I realized I was going to have to craft thousands of rounds to gain any real amount of skill points in using them. Well, gathering the materials and crafting the ammo wasn't any less of a process than crafting anything else in the game was. So after spending hours just to make a few mags, and wow being such a huge hit that basically all of my friends started playing it, I just couldn't justify spending any more time on this game. I also found vanilla wow too grindy and got heavily into eve online instead. Yes, I am an odd person.

2:25 – I don't. Unless I can't change it. Then I use the arrow keys with my left hand and put my right hand over to the rest of the keyboard, as nature taught me since 1992. LEFT HAND IS FOR DIRECTIONS.

  • @BruklinBridge

I ised arrow keys back in the day. I learned on quake and had to ise arrow keys because I have really big fingers and the original Microsoft Natural keyboard jad big arrow keys with nothing else around them. I never recovered from that setup, even going as far as to buy a stack of keyboards so i would have some when they were discontinued, which they eventually were for a time.

I actually use arrows, but just because I am left handed and didn't think to train myself righthandedly with mouse control
